Hi Squawkers Chicken Fans! I’m back! I got lost for a while in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. What a beautiful place, so scenic and peaceful. If you like waterfalls and lighthouses, it’s definitely worth the trip. Besides the Great Lakes, the U.P. is home to Lake of the Clouds, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, tons of wildlife and a few Squawkers!

On the Wisconsin/Michigan border is Porterfield Pit Stop in Marinette, WI. Moving into Michigan, we have Powers Convenience Center in Powers, Gulliver’s Crossroads in Gulliver and Cedar Pantry in Cedarville.

Having fun at the MN Wild game

I spent a lot of time just driving around the U.P., until I got a call from my good friend Nordy. Nordy is the mascot for the Minnesota Wild NHL hockey team. He invited me to come see the new Squawkers Boneless Wing Bar at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, MN, home of the Minnesota Wild.

I got there on Monday, November 28th. The Squawkers Boneless Wing Bar looks great and the chicken is delicious! We stayed to watch the game (the Wild won 3-1) and hang out with some of our fans. It was a lot of fun and Nordy invited me back to do it again. If you’re headed to a Minnesota Wild game on December 14, 2011 or February 9, 2012 keep a lookout for me. I’ll be in Section 118!

I’ll also be going to the Green Bay Packers game on December 11, 2011. I’m having a tailgate party in the parking lot by the Tundra Tailgate Zone before the game. Stop by for some fun and to say hi!

Greetings Squawkers Chicken fans!

I’ve been busy continuing my journey through Wisconsin and visiting the Squawkers Chicken locations. Turning to the north, I’ve made my way through the small town of Melrose where great tasting chicken is served at the Melrose Express Mart.

North of Melrose is The Corner Store in Eau Claire. Eau Claire is also home to the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire campus where “blugolds” can enjoy Squawkers Chicken in their Hilltop dining facility.

I finished up this leg of my trip by visiting Abbyland Truck Stop in Curtiss, Mercer BP in Mercer and Cary Mine Convenience in Hurley. I’m now on the cusp of entering the U.P. of Michigan.

In the upcoming weeks, I’ll be working my way through the U.P. and heading back down into Wisconsin. Let’s hope the weather holds. I need to get home for Thanksgiving. I’ve already been mistaken for Big Bird on Halloween, I wouldn’t want anyone to think I’m a turkey…

As my adventures continue, I find myself in the middle of the “driftless region” of Wisconsin. “Driftless” simply means untouched by glaciers. The wooded hills and deep creek valleys make this a remarkably beautiful part of the state. At the base of the steep limestone hills are cold water streams perfect for trout fishing.

There are several Squawkers Chicken locations in this area, including Arena Super Stop in Arena, WI. Arena is also known as the “Gateway to the River Valley” and means “open sandy place” in Latin.

Lone Stop Shell in Lone Rock, WI (with its outdoor Watering Hole open during the summer months) is a destination in and of itself. Named for a sandstone outcropping, Lone Rock is less than 20 miles from the famous House on the Rock and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Wisconsin home, Taliesin.

Moving further to the west, I continued my journey into “the land the glaciers forgot” better known as Blue River. Here, The Port at Blue River has some wonderfully fresh Squawkers chicken. And I was hungry after my exploration of nearby Eagle Cave, Wisconsin’s largest onyx cave, with over 3000 feet of passage!

Another Port location in Bridgeport makes great tasting chicken easy to find! Bridgeport, is located approximately 5 miles from Prairie du Chien where watching the bald eagles is a must! The bald eagles think this is a great place to spend the winter, and I’d have to agree…

There are several Squawkers Chicken locations in south-central Wisconsin. If it were earlier in the year, I would have camped out at Yogi Bear Camp Resort in beautiful Wisconsin Dells. Besides all the water parks and attractions in the area, there’s a ton of fun activities at the campgrounds, including enjoying great Squawkers Chicken.

In Merrimac, I took a trip across Lake Wisconsin on the ferry. The Merrimac Ferry is Wisconsin’s only free ferry, but it wasn’t always that way. Back in 1924, they charged 35 cents per car, 5 cents for each pedestrian, and 75 cents per truck. I wonder what they would’ve charged for a chicken? Maybe they’d know at Lakeside General Store in Merrimac. You should ask them the next time you stop there for Squawkers Chicken!

My journey along Lake Wisconsin took me to Prairie du Sac and Sauk City, also known as the Sauk Prairie area. Both Prairie Cenex and Sauk Cenex are great at serving up delicious chicken items in their Squawkers Chicken locations. While in the area, I took a tour of the local winery to find out which wine goes best with the chicken. With beautiful landscaping and a lovely view, it was time well spent!

To find out more about these and other Squawkers Chicken locations, be sure to visit our website at www.squawkers.net. And check back soon for more of my adventures.

Happy October! The leaves are changing colors and it’s a great time of year to be hanging around central Wisconsin. I’ll be starting my journey around the country soon, but figured I’d hang with the family, take in the local sights and stop by a few nearby Squawkers locations while I’m still here.

Squawkers Chicken at Plainfield 66 Travel Plaza

My first stop was the Plainfield 66 Travel Plaza. They have a great setup right off I-39. With a recently updated Squawkers kiosk, their chicken is fresh, hot and looking good! And who can resist the ice cream they serve!

Next, I stayed right here in Westfield and visited with the folks at Folstrom’s South. They’re also right off the interstate providing easy access to a quick and convenient chicken sandwich or snack.

Squawkers Chicken at Oxford Travel Plaza

My home stay is quickly coming to an end, but I managed to go to the Oxford Fall Festival last Saturday. Between the classic car show, fishing and woodcarving demonstrations, and pumpkin decorating I headed over to Oxford Travel Plaza. They have a great setup with weekly chicken specials and a take home menu so you can call ahead and order exactly what you want. They’re also running specials during Packers games, so be sure to stop in and check it out.

Next week I’ll be visiting a couple more Squawkers Chicken locations in Wisconsin. I’m sticking around the state for a while since I have an appearance to make in Green Bay soon.

Whew! What a day! The Grand Opening of the Squawkers Chicken location in Laurelton, PA was a huge success!

The radio station ran commercials all day long as well as being on hand giving away free lottery tickets.People lined into the street to take advantage of the lowered gas prices. While customers were waiting in the gas line they were given samples of chicken sandwiches and wings.

We even handed out a choice of Pittsburgh Steeler or Philadelphia Eagles football schedules. I must say… the Steeler schedule was way more popular.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by and made it a huge success! Be sure to visit Laurel Market Squawkers for more great promotions and great tasting chicken!

Wednesday, August 17, 2011 will mark the opening of a brand new Squawkers location – Short Stop - Laurel Market in Laurelton, PA. I hear that Laurelton is in the heart of the Tuscarora State Forest, White Mountain Wilderness area; where tourists can camp, hunt and enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery. The fall season is especially busy with changing autumn leaves and festivals and nearby Amish settlements draw many tourists to this area. Located only 40 miles east of Penn State University, Laurel Market is a full service grocery store and now has a complete food service area with comfortable seating that draws local workers and tourists alike.

The kick off day will include many in-store specials, a live radio broadcast from WWBE – Mifflinburg, PA (streaming live online), free samples of Squawkers chicken, 10 chances to win a gasoline fill-up at $0.98 per gallon, and most importantly – a visit from me!

I hope you can take time out of your busy schedule to stop by and see what’s happening at Laurel Market – 1415 State Route 235, Laurelton, PA. Don’t forget to say “hi” to me as well. Hope to see you there!

Born to a humble farming community in south-central Wisconsin, I have always been considered a little different. Ever hear Hans Christian Andersen’s story of The Ugly Duckling? Kind of like that, only with chicken. I simply didn’t fit in. Rather than being content with the daily workings of farm life, I spent much of my youth dreaming of what was on the other side of the road; causing my parents a lot of sleepless nights. My teenage years are best described as rebellious. (Names will be omitted to protect the innocent!) I went through all the usual phases: chasing girls, wild parties, streaking, the occasional egging…

Just when my parents were ready to send me off to boarding school, I discovered my passion – food! Instead of continuing my self-destructive ways, I focused my energies on creating a business. My idea was to make it easy and affordable for schools, convenience stores and recreation facilities to add foodservice to their operations. And what type of food do I know best – chicken, of course! With the help of Brakebush Brothers, a further processed chicken manufacturer that has employed more of my relatives than I can count on both wings, I launched the Squawkers brand in 2000.

Years later, with hundreds of Squawkers in existence, I’ve decided to take a journey across the country and visit my Squawkers convenience store and recreation locations. I will be sharing my experiences in this blog. Hopefully, you will enjoy hearing about my adventures. I may end up in your neck of the woods, so keep an eye out for my Henda S2000 convertible – hey, at least it’s not a coupe – with a bumper sticker that says, “chick magnet.”
